| Michael Schumpelt (grand piano) | |
"Every piano strongly attracts me in an almost magical way, and no matter where I find it or what condition it is in, I just have to play it. Every instrument has its own history and tells my music in a new and different way." This is what MICHAEL SCHUMPELT, founding member of the progressive rock band TEA FOR TWO, has to tell about his love of the piano.
More than 20 years as the keyboardist and flutist of Tea For Two and uncountable piano evenings had to pass before Michael Schumpelt has finally given in to quite a strong demand for a pure piano solo album.
Mirror of my Soul - the name says it all. Each track has its very own short story to tell. The listener gets caught in the dense atmospheres and clear melodies of an album that creates a truely original blend of musical styles: classical music, blues and rock piano. Mirror of my Soul is an album that does not attempt to display breathtaking virtuosity but rather focusses on subtle musical arrangemants.
On the album you find piano versions of some classic TEA FOR TWO songs like 101 or Things to Come, but most of the tracks are SCHUMPELT compositions that are now released for he first time. They let us have a glimpse at the musicians (and at our own) soul. "Playing the piano I can express myself, let off steam, relax ... without words. I am just listening to myself and while I am playing I realize how I feel. It really is like a view into the mirror of my soul."
If you compare the music of TEA FOR TWO with a good Whiskey, then MICHAEL SCHUMPELTs Mirror of my Soul is a strong, fine Single Malt without compromise. So it is probably best to enjoy the album late in the evening and allow yourself a glass.
